Governor’s wife arrives in Bermuda

Presentation: Governor George Fergusson and his wife Margaret with a copy of "Champ: The One and Only Alma Hunt" by Ira Philip

Well, we’ve had an extraorinarily busy week this time around, and one of the major highlights was being able to make a countesy call at Government House and to present Bermuda’s new Governor George Fergusson with an autographed copy of my book Champ: The One and Only Alma Hunt. The Governor had only returned the night before after a week or more in London. He was accompanied by his charming wife Margaret. She had been unable, for medical reasons, to be with him when he was formally welcomed to the island in June. So, we had a media scoop when Mrs Fergusson had no hesitation in agreeing to be photographed with her husband. It was her first, of the many likely to be taken as the Governor's wife. Over a cup of tea wih the Governor and my own fiancee, Mrs Joan Moore, we learned that Margaret, whose maiden name was Wookey, was a career officer with the British Council. She’s the mother of three grown daughters, who planned to be in Bermuda for Cup Match; and she had a son who is deceased.Meanwhile, the Governor who was thumbing through my Champ book, said he liked my inscription, which he read aloud.Simply, my autograph read: “I pray this panoramic portrait will serve as an eye-opener into the life and times of Alma Hunt, a Bermudian hero who as a goodwill ambassador significantly transformed sports in Bermuda, the Caribbean, Scotland and whereever he impacted.” - July 26, 2012.The Governor revealed his own Scottish background and betrayed an early attachment to Champ. I thanked him and expressed the hope it would be in time for Cup Match, and the roles he’s likely to play, officially at the game.
