Members of the new Central Committee elected following the ouster of the Progressive Labour Party from Government in the December 17 general election. From the left, party chairman Maynard Dill, Drum Major honouree David (Lumumba) Hughes, PLP Leader Marc Beam, Kim Lightbourne and Deputy Leader Derrick Burgess MP.

The 50th Anniversary Luncheon celebrating the Founding of the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party, proved to be ‘golden’ indeed. The luncheon was a complete sell out, despite the recent shenanigans that tended to besmirch the PLP at this most significant time of its evolution. Many thoughts flushed through the mind of this Scribe in accepting the honour to attend the celebration and witness presentation of the annual Drum Major Awards to persons for significant contributions to the party. We personally knew the five PLP Founding Fathers and shared unreservedly their hopes and aspirations to bring about a better, fully democratic and independent Bermuda. We have written many features, now in the archives, how Wilfred (Mose) Allen, the motivating spirit behind the Founders, along with Hugh (Ryo) Richardson, Albert (Peter) Smith, Walter N H Robinson and Edward DeJean revolutionised Bermuda politically through their 1963 meetings in Richardson’s garage. With the exception of Mose Allen, the rest of the Founders had cultivated a good relationship with this journalist, then a Parliamentary reporter for the only black owned and operated newspaper in the country.Anyone will tell you, that Mose Allen ‘took no prisoners.’ He was a fanatic; had no ‘friends.’ Only associates. We had seen first hand how the PLP had gone from strength to strength following its various internal eruptions from time to time, more over party leadership than ideology. As a former Party Chairman and Senator we had seen the PLP evolve from Opposition to Government and back again to Opposition. But it was ‘something else,’ this time around since December 17, 2012. A new leader named of all things ‘Marc’ is at the helm.Marc Bean has stamped himself as a staunch, insightful, young, progressive adherent to the principles and ideology of the party. He made an impact at the closing of the luncheon, sounding a clear warning to the newly installed One Bermuda Alliance Government of Premier Craig Cannonier, that the PLP did not intend to be long as a ‘Government-in-waiting.’The invocation at the luncheon was by party treasurer, Stephen Todd, St. Paul AME pastor Nicholas Tweed invoked the blessing. Keynote speaker was barrister Eugene Johnston. He was introduced by new Sen Renee Ming and thanked by similarly new MP Lawrence Scott.
