Bermuda came, saw and conquered. That’s the way Premier Paula Cox summed up the Island’s performances on the track and as hosts for this year’s Carifta Games. In all, Bermuda earned six medals, including its first gold in eight years won by 15-year-old triple jumper Justin Donawa who soared to a personal best and a new Bermuda Carifta best of 14.63 metres.“Mr Donawa is an extraordinary athlete with much potential and he should be proud,” the Premier said. “We are proud of him and all of our athletes; they threw their hearts and souls into the competition.“While it is easy to highlight the single contribution of a given athlete, I believe the true magic of Mr Donawa’s performance was one that uplifted us all. But it was the team spirit we saw exhibited and the spirit of healthy competition that we enjoyed.“Our athletes came, they successfully competed and all 70-odd of Team Bermuda won. Brand, Flag and Country.”Others producing podium displays in their respective age groups were middle distance runners Shaquille Dill (silver), Taylor-Ashley Bean (silver and bronze), Juma Mouchette (bronze) and Kyrah Scraders (silver).“For such a small country, we clearly punched above our weight and to see the professionalism and discipline exhibited was awesome,” the Premier added. “It is widely known that though we are a small country, Bermuda can produce big results.”Premier Cox reckoned the future looks bright for local track and field.“This is just the beginning of a bright future for our young athletes and the many to follow in their footsteps,” she said. “The facilities are grand and are here to be used and the track and field training staff appeared rejuvenated by our overall performance this past weekend. Our future is bright, it’s up to us to keep the lamp lit.”As hosts for this year’s Carifta Games, Premier Cox said Bermuda went far beyond the call of duty.“We were asked to host the Lime Carifta Games and it exceeded our visitor’s expectations,” she said. “Bermuda had national pride at our successful hosting of the 2012 CARIFTA and the performance of our athletes.“Ms Donna Watson, the BTFA President, the Carifta team and the Ministry of Youth, Families and Sports did Bermuda proud. The community responded and we were all proud and pleased at the level of community spirit. Indeed, we were proud to be Bermudian.”Premier Cox described the carnival atmosphere during the three day event at the National Sports Centre (NSC) as “electrifying”.“The Gombey drummers and performers and the various musical instruments used by our guests from around the Caribbean were a welcome addition,” she said. “The outstanding performances of Juma Mouchette, Kyrah Scraders, Justin Donawa and Shaquille Dill provided great ignition points.“Another highlight was to see our young athletes coming together with the other Carifta teams to celebrate on the field at the closing ceremonies. This was a fitting conclusion to a spectacular event. All the teams were celebrating and a festival-like atmosphere and warm camaraderie.“The Spirit of Carifta dominated. This Carifta Games will be remembered for a long time.”
