Gymnasts jumping for joy

Bermuda’s girls gymnastics team somersaulted, cartwheeled and vaulted themselves to a silver medal in the Island Games team floor/vault event.Competing before a large crowd in sweltering conditions inside the National Training Centre in St David’s, Bermuda’s team of Zantae Dill, Tabytha Hofheins, Gabrielle Vincent, Danielle Wall and Sadia Wilson did themselves and their country proud by grabbing a place on the podium.Bermuda coach Duke Nelligan attributed the team’s success to a hard work ethic.“I think we have trained as hard as any Bermudian ever trained and I was really proud of my athletes,” he said.“I think we are starting to see the semblances of a real cohesive and strong work ethic that’s only going to pay dividends for us in the future.”Nelligan said the Island’s girls team have been urged to strive for higher standards at this year’s Games.“What we have asked them is not just to come in and perform but to give it everything they have,” he added. “It’s very easy to fall back on ‘I tried my hardest’ and we want them to come in and say ‘we’re going for it’ and it started with Zantae Dill on vaulting.“She said ‘I’m going to try my bigger vault’, which is a one and a half twist, and that was the attitude of all the athletes.”Nelligan also cited teamwork as another key factor to the hosts’ silver medal display.“This is a team event and we approach it as a team,” he said. “I think as a team we held together tough and the girls that didn’t compete were cheering and urging everybody on.”Isle of Man (101.500) won the gold medal while Faroe Islands (93.450) claimed the bronze. Bermuda finished with 98.650 points.Taking the gold medal in the men’s team floor/vault were Faroe Islands (76.050) while the silver went to Isle of Man (75.000).There were only two countries represented in the men’s team floor/vault event.
