Squash pair lose in semis

Bermuda finished fourth in both the men’s and women’s squash doubles today at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association (BSRA) courts.The men’s team of Chris Stout and Noah Browne lost to Gibraltar’s Anthony Brindle and Stephen Schacaluga in heartbreaking style, 14-15, 15-11, 15-9.Cayman Islands’ Mark Chaloner and Cameron Stafford beat Jersey’s Michael Hopkins and Scott Gautier 15-8, 15-5 in the final.“It is always disappointing to lose any match but tomorrow we come back to play and need to be focused on what is next up for us (team event),” said Browne.“This isn’t the end for us and we look to correct our mistakes and get back on track in our next match.”Earlier in the day Browne and Stout lost to Chaloner and Stafford 15-7, 15-7 in their semi-final, while Hopkins and Gautier beat Brindle and Schacaluga 15-13, 15-2 in their showdown.Denise Kyme, mother of former Bermuda number one Nick Kyme, and Liz Martin also lost their bronze medal contest to Shetland Islands pair Kerry Pottinger and Joan Smith 15-10, 15-6 on Kyme’s birthday.She was presented with a cake following the match.“It was a fantastic day, a bronze medal would have been awesome but we were playing a very strong team from Shetland and we just fell a bit short today,” said Kyme.It was the Cayman Islands who won gold in the women’s doubles as Marlene West and Jacklyn Geils beat Natalie Dodd and Katherin Jensen of Guernsey 5-15, 15-8, 15-8.Earlier in the day, Kyme and Martin fell to top seeds West and Geils in their women's doubles semi-final.Bermuda pair lost 15-5, 15-4.Dodd and beat Pottinger and Smith 15-8, 15-10.Squash continues tomorrow at the BSRA with the team competition that sees Bermuda take on Gibraltar at 1pm, followed by a clash with Jersey at 7pm.
