Medals up for grabs on final day

Veteran sailor Malcolm Smith competes in thee Laser Standard Rig class.

Bermuda’s Malcolm Smith remains in medal contention despite losing precious ground on day four of the NatWest Island Games sailing regatta.Sailing in blustery eight to 14 knot southwest breezes, Smith managed a fourth and eighth that wasn’t enough to protect the overnight lead in the Laser Standard Rig fleet which he shared with Ynys Mon’s Eifion Mon.Regaining the lead was Aland’s Niklas Areschoug (17 pts) who thrived in the conditions in the Great Sound, scoring a bullet and a second to open up a one-point cushion over nearest rival Eifion Mon (18 pts).In third is Smith (24 pts) who will be looking to make one last push for the gold medal in the final two races of the series which remains wide open.Bermuda’s remaining sailor in the Laser Standard Rig, Rockal Evans (35 pts), remains in sixth well out of medal contention. Evans had a second and seventh in the seventh and eighth races. The lead also swapped hands in the Laser Radial Rig fleet, which also remains wide open, with Aland’s Markus Ronnberg replacing Bermuda’s Kalin Hillier at the top of the leaderboard.Ronnberg snatched the lead after posting a bullet and a second while Hillier, who struggled a bit in the heavier air, had to settle for a sixth and eighth.Ronnberg (21 pts) leads Hillier (23 pts) by two points with two races remaining. In third is Bermuda’s Brett Wright (25 pts) who managed a third and a fifth to keep his medal hopes alive.Bermuda (87 pts) still lead the team event after eight races followed by Aland (93 pts) and Ynys Mon (94 pts) in second and third.Meanwhile, the Island Games sailboarding event has concluded.Provisional results showed Cayman Island’s Andrew Petts (30 pts) winning the gold medal, Guernsey’s Pierre Le Page (54 pts) the silver and Bermuda’s Alex Jones (55 pts) the bronze at the completion of the 20 race series.
