Teen Hillier steals spotlight

Teenage sailor Kalin Hillier has overhauled compatriot Brett Wright to claim pole position in the NatWest Island Games Laser Radial fleet.The youngest member of Bermuda’s team was at his absolute best during the third day of racing in the Great Sound, scoring a bullet and a second to take over top spot after making a drop.After six races Hillier (11 points) holds a six-point lead over Wright (17) who had a sixth and tenth on the third day of racing in eight to 12 knot breezes.In third is Menorca’s Oscar Gomez (18 pts).Also thick in the hunt for individual medal honours is Bermuda’s Malcolm Smith (13 pts) who shares the lead at the top of the Laser Stadard Rig leaderboard with Ynys Mon’s Eifion Mon (13 pts) after six races.Smith managed a bullet and a seventh which he duly discarded after the sixth race.Rockal Evans, Bermuda remaining Laser Standard Rig sailor, posted a sixth and seventh to remain in sixth in the 16-boat fleet.Day one leader Niklas Areschoug (14 pts) of Aland and Ynys Mon’s Dyfrig Mon (14 pts) were tied for third with four races remaining.Bermuda (59 pts) still lead the team event followed by Ynys Mon (72 pts) and Aland (81) in second and third respectively.Meanwhile, Bermuda’s Alex Jones (38 pts) remains in medal contention in the sailboarding event also being held in the Great Sound.After 15 races Jones is tied for second with Guernsey’s Pierre Le Page (38 pts), some eight points adrift of leader Andrew Petts (25 pts) of Cayman Islands.Scott Mello (60 pts) is the next highest local sailboarder in seventh overall.
