Chewstick hosts autumn retreat

Calling all serious artists ... The Chewstick Foundation is hosting its annual autumn intensive weekend to get people away from their everyday stresses and tapping into their creative sides. The retreat will take place next Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the “picturesque” Port Island.Organiser Deidra-Lee Bean said the event “has been a major success” in the past, with several participants going on to continue their artistic development. The programme includes participant-led workshops, collaborations, group activities and quiet time dedicated to helping people clear their minds and focus on their craft.Ms Bean said: “People can get distracted by the everyday demands of living and don’t always make time to reflect or to express themselves creatively.“The fall retreat provides an opportunity to do just that, as well as foster camaraderie in a safe space, literally off the main Island of Bermuda.“The Chewstick Foundation encourages participants to unplug from their cellphones and the worries of daily living and experience a totally creative weekend, disconnected from the regular stresses of their lives.”Participants can take part in sessions led by poet Stephan Johnstone, guitarist Gavin (Djata) Smith, health and fitness instructor Jenille Smith and singer Joy T Barnum. They can also spend time hiking, exploring, swimming, playing football or taking part in yoga, canoeing and fishing while on Port’s Island.Participation costs $125 for non-members, $100 for members and $75 for persons under 18. There are also special rates available for parents and children. The price includes meals, lodging, workshops and transportation to and from the site. A boat will depart from Albuoy’s Point on Friday at 6pm and return Sunday at 7pm.Participants are asked to bring comfortable shoes, practical clothing, bedding and “a positive attitude”.Space is limited to about 40 people.
