The man behind the laughter

Just for Laughs Bermuda founder Richard Simon

Richard Simon entertains hundreds of residents each year — without ever getting on a stage.

He’s the man behind Just For Laughs Bermuda, the annual comedy show that breaks the post-Christmas doldrums.

Although not a comedian himself, he’s always appreciated a good joke.

When he moved to the Island from Canada in the early 2000s, he capitalised on a relationship with Just For Laughs Montreal and, Just for Laughs Bermuda was born.

The show returns for its ninth edition early next year.

Local comedians Jonathan Young and Nadanja will take turns opening the event, which runs January 7 through 10 at the Earl Cameron Theatre and at Fairmont Southampton.

Alonzo Bodden returns as host. This year’s headliner is Saturday Night Live alum Jim Breuer; Canadians Debra DiGiovanni and Graham Chittenden complete the line-up.

It’s going to be a great few nights, according to Mr Simon.

Tickets are now available at www.bdatix.bm, Pulp & Circumstance (Washington Lane) and Fabulous Fashions (Heron Bay Plaza). There’s a $3 surcharge per ticket if ordered by phone — 232-2255.

A list of Mr Simon’s favourite comedians

5. Billy Crystal; 4. Jerry Seinfeld; 3. Howie Mandel; 2. Bill Cosby; 1. Alonzo Bodden

“I think [Alonzo Bodden is] absolutely the best and so underrated in the US,” Mr Simon said. “We’re so lucky he hasn’t his own TV sitcom because we couldn’t afford him. I think this is his seventh time hosting and we’ve never had anyone say they didn’t like him.”
