Dealer prepares show of top Bermuda art

Christmas may come early this year for local art collectors.

Manhattan-based art dealer Nicholas Lusher is holding a special three-day show of top Bermuda art at a Pembroke home.

The show will include Bermuda scenes by highly sought after artists such as Denys Wortman, Prosper Senat and William Wyllie and Charles Lloyd Tucker.

Each piece will cost “under $50,000”.

“I am dealing art in New York City,” said Mr Lusher, a Bermudian. “I moved [there] in January 2011, and I am continuing in the same career that I had in Bermuda. I have been buying and selling works of art for over 30 years.”

The pieces now up for sale have been “quietly” collected over a period of eight months, he added.

“I had these great works and this is the time for celebrating so I thought why not have an opening,” said Mr Lusher.

A temporary gallery has been set up in at his mother Joy Lusher's home, The Old House in Point Shares.

Mr Lusher said the grandest painting in the show was probably one by Denys Wortman, a New York artist and cartoonist who visited the Island several times between 1912 and 1923.

“He is a very difficult artist to find,” said Mr Lusher. “He is very important and his paintings date from what is known as the Armory Show in 1913. That was a watershed in American art history because many of the greatest American and European artists showed their work including Picasso, Matisse and E Ambrose Webster.”

Wortman showed a 1912 painting called Bermuda Waterfront, at the New York Armory Show.

Mr Lusher said the pieces in the show are mostly historic, but there will be a couple of contemporary pieces including one by Charman Prize winner Graham Foster.

“The quality of the work in this show is very high,” Mr Lusher said. “It offers a very unique opportunity for a customer to see some of the better artists depicting Bermuda. These are artists who are well recognised overseas as well as in Bermuda. I could see these paintings easily being auctioned in New York.”

There will be an invitation-only opening on December 11, and then a public opening on December 12 and 13 from 10am to 6pm.
