A Bermudian musician and comedian will take on several characters during his first local show in four years. Daniel Frith, best known for his reggae artist persona Uzimon, will bring his show Cabareggae to the island this month with the help of several local musicians.

The variety show will blend comedy and crowd work with roots reggae performances, all while Mr Frith takes on several characters, including the light-hearted Uzimon and Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Mr Frith said: “I’m so excited because we’re trying some new stuff. It’ll be a mix of some new things and things that I know will work.”

He added: “I’ve never done this show anywhere. The show will just be a celebration of humour, of music and the fact that we’re all going through the same thing.”

Mr Frith, who has been living in Tokyo, Japan, for the past year, said he had wanted to host his own cabaret show since he was in university.

He performed songs for “many years” in New York, Canada and Britain, but began experimenting with several comedy acts before finding the proper balance between music and acting.

He explained: “When people are standing and having a few drinks and they hear live music, they want live music — and that’s great, but they don’t want the skits if it goes on for too long.

“Meanwhile, if you’re mostly doing skits and then show some music in there, people don’t know when to clap.”

One character he looked forward to doing, Mr Frith explained, was a caricature of Putin, whom he said was “as close to a James Bond villain as we can get”.

He said the idea came from his wife, who told him when they first began dating that he looked like the controversial leader.

Mr Frith said his rendition of the politician would be a critique on autocrats and strongmen leaders.

He added: “If we strip all the real-world horror of him, he’s a very funny figure.”

Mr Frith will perform a mix of original songs and covers with The Barrel Tones. The variety show will also include performances from Livewires and Desta Zion, and Rivah.
