Art, wine and music on show at Gosling’s
Head to Gosling’s Wine Cellar on Saturday for an evening of fine art, wine and classical music.
Michaela Antoinette is bringing all three together in celebration of Bermuda Art Month.
Harmonious Hues: An Autumn Vernissage will feature the work of 13 artists alongside a live performance by internationally acclaimed classical cellist Isaiah Free Pennington.
Ms Antoinette, founder and chief executive of Art Drop Bermuda, hopes the event will shine a spotlight on the island’s creative talent.
Guests can also enjoy a selection of wines from the Gosling’s collection and gourmet canapés, with attendance limited to 100 people.
“Art Month is a phenomenal time to celebrate the depth and brilliance of our creative community,” Ms Antoinette said.
“With Harmonious Hues, I wanted to curate an intimate, highly sensory event where fine art is treated with the prestige it deserves, pairing breathtaking visuals with classical music, premium wine and elegant bites.”
Art Drop Bermuda was established by Ms Antoinette to create more opportunities for professional artists to exhibit and sell their work outside traditional gallery settings.
The organisation regularly holds showcases at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, as well as smaller exhibitions at private venues.
For this upcoming exhibition, a “signature event” on the Art Month calendar, Ms Antoinette has brought together a mix of established artists and emerging talent, with new works among those on display.
On show will be pieces by sculptor Scott King, Robert Bassett, Morgan Dagata and Ms Antoinette herself.
There will also be works by Melissa Bowman, a newcomer to the Bermuda art scene, Phoebe Hughes, Eli Cedrone and others.
Guests will have the opportunity to pre-order jewellery from an exclusive collaboration between jeweller David Rose and artist Shanna Hollis.
Artwork will be available for purchase, with people able to browse a digital catalogue through a QR code or the Art Drop Bermuda website.
Ms Antoinette sees considerable value in creating opportunities for others rather than concentrating solely on promoting her own work.
“It has a bigger sense of community when we can do it together,” she said.
“And other artists need to show their work. That is literally why I created Art Drop — for other professional artists to have a chance to showcase their work again, or showcase something new.”
The addition of classical music to Saturday’s exhibition has particular significance for Ms Antoinette, whose appreciation for it began in childhood.
Her mother, Marcel Clemens, was an opera singer, and she began learning classical piano at the age of 3½.
That background inspired her to invite Mr Free Pennington to perform. The artistic director of the Bermuda Chamber Music Festival recently completed a two-year chamber music residency at New York’s Lincoln Centre.
Harmonious Hues is one of the signature events of the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s Art Month celebrations, which feature exhibitions and cultural activities throughout October.
The event takes its name from vernissage, a term that originally referred to the final varnishing of paintings before an exhibition opened to the public, but has since come to mean a special preview or opening.
Ms Antoinette welcomed the BTA’s commitment to celebrating Bermuda’s creative talent, saying art played a vital role in preserving a society’s history and culture.
“It’s so important to celebrate artists in a society,” she said. “I think it’s one of the most important things a society can do, because if you think about it, even historically, what do we have left from a society that has crumbled, except for the art, the literature?”
For Ms Antoinette, the value of artistic expression extends beyond the enjoyment it brings to audiences today. It also provides a record of the people, ideas and traditions that have shaped communities over generations.
“It’s like proof of life in a way, proof of existence, proof of community, proof of culture,” she said.
“To have the BTA feature art in this big way, it’s very important and it’s much appreciated.”
She encouraged residents and visitors to take advantage of the many events taking place throughout October, pointing to the BTA’s events calendar as a way to discover what is happening across the island.
In keeping with the event’s autumn theme, guests attending Harmonious Hues are encouraged to dress in deep jewel tones.
