Fraudster posing as BMA targets bank details
For the second time in less than a week, the Bermuda Monetary Authority has warned of an individual falsely claiming to be acting on its behalf has contacted people and sought to get their bank account details.
The financial-services regulator stressed that it would never request banking details from individuals through telephone calls, e-mails or other communication channels.
“That person is requesting banking details from members of the public and/or advising members of the public that their bank accounts will be frozen,” the BMA said in a statement.
“These calls are not legitimate communications from the BMA.”
Members of the public should not provide bank account details, passwords, security information or other personal financial information to anyone making such a request while claiming to represent the BMA.
“This is consistent with the Authority’s previous public warning concerning telephone phishing attempts,” the BMA added.
“Anyone receiving outreach should not provide any banking or personal financial information.”
Those doubting whether a communication genuinely originated from the BMA are urged to call the regulator on (441) 295-5278.
People who receive attempts to obtain banking information purportedly on behalf of the BMA are urged to contact their bank directly and consider reporting the matter to the Bermuda Police Service.
