Reply to Budget to dominate House session

Jarion Richardson, the One Bermuda Alliance leader, is to deliver the Opposition’s comeback to the Bermuda Budget 2024-25 today in the House of Assembly — with no other items listed for debate by legislators.

David Burt delivered the Budget Statement last Friday, in which he forecast the island’s first balanced budget in 20 years.

The Premier’s statement came with a swipe in advance at the Opposition’s reply, which Mr Burt said would likely be “laced with personal attacks, racial innuendo, unsubstantiated accusations of corruption”.

Dwayne Robinson, an opposition senator, told the Upper House on Wednesday that today’s reply would “give Bermudians insight on where we stand as an island, and not on platitudes”.

“The reply will also show the OBA's alternative views on managing the island's finances.”

Mr Robinson called for unity even as he said that the Progressive Labour Party “peddles in division”.

He added: “There needs to be real consensus between Government and our fishermen, taxi drivers, educators, parents, entrepreneurs, insurance industry and the public of Bermuda.

“All play a critical role in the success of Bermuda. We have repeatedly seen the Progressive Labour Party push forward with its agenda regardless of who speaks out against it, even its own party supporters.”

Mr Burt is also to update MPs on Bermuda’s potential move to become a full member of the Caribbean Community and Common Market.

The move was revealed in the 2023 Throne Speech.

The Premier, who has defended the advantages of Bermuda joining Caricom, has also said extensive consultation would come before joining the bloc.

Walter Roban, the home affairs minister, will give a statement on the island’s fisheries, in the wake of negotiations with the Fishermen’s Association of Bermuda over its objections to the Bermuda Ocean Prosperity Plan.

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the public works minister, is to give MPs an update on road paving and equipment as the island continues to grapple with pothole repairs during unseasonably heavy rainfall.

Jason Hayward, the economy and labour minister, will speak before the House on a policy statement covering tips and gratuities.

It follows the passing of the Employment (Protection of Employee Tips and Other Gratuities) Amendment Act 2023.

Vance Campbell, the Cabinet Office minister, is scheduled to give a statement on the Draft City of Hamilton Plan 2024.
