Sand sculpture contest is just around the corner

Cobbs Hill Gospel Chapel invite you to their annual community BBQ at the church field on Saturday, August 16 from 5pm until 8pm. Food, snowballs, popcorn, games, fun castles, Gombeys, music and entertainment will be on offer and completely free. All are also welcome to attend their special community church service the following day at 11.15am. Get ready for an afternoon on the green, followed by an evening on the water, at the Mariners RFC and FunGolf’s 2nd Annual Fun Golf Open on Saturday, August 23.

Organisers advise that you get the 2pm ferry from Hamilton to Dockyard for the first wave of tee-offs at 3pm. Participants can expect a couple of free drinks per player plus a BBQ, prizes and a sunset cruise featuring DJ Einstein to party back to Hamilton. The Sunset Glow Cruise will depart at 8pm, returning to Hamilton at 10.30pm, with a limited number of $20 tickets available for non-golfers. TROIKA Bermuda present Work in Progress #5: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts. Based on the Academy-Award winning animated feature, the stage version includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman along with new songs by Mr Menken and Tim Rice. Audiences will be transported to the heart of provincial life in a lovely French town. This two-hour magical tale is family-friendly, although not suitable for newborns. Directed by Steven Huntsman and produced by Edith Caines, with choreography by Eric Bean Jr, the show will run from Thursday, August 28 until Saturday, August 30. Doors open at 7pm and showtime is at 7.30pm each evening, with a matinee performance at 2pm on the Saturday. Tickets are $45 for general admission, $60 for bronze donors, $100 for silver donors, $150 for gold donors and $250 for platinum donors. All tickets are available from www.pTix.bm. Unleash your creativity with Bermuda’s natural resources at the 19th Annual Bermuda Sand Sculpture Competition on Saturday, August 30. This will be at the usual location of beautiful Horseshoe Bay. Sculpting begins at 10am and finishes at 4pm, followed by judging and an awards presentation. Available categories, with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes, are Children, Teenagers, Families, and Adults/Open/Company/Organiser/Tourist. Not sure where to start? Well, you’re in luck as on Saturday, August 23 and Sunday, August 24, you can learn the tips, tricks, tools and techniques from 5pm until 6pm at the free Sand Sculpting Clinics also on Horseshoe Bay. The Bermuda Bridge Club, (affiliated with the American Contract Bridge League), is running a one-day seminar, Learn Bridge in a Day, on Saturday, September 20.
