Motorist in Friday’s road death identified

Police have named the woman who died after her car hit a tree on Friday as Lois Simmons.

Ms Simmons was injured in the crash near Barnes Corner about 4.30pm and taken to hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

A police spokesman said: “The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 84-year-old Lois Simmons and extends sincere condolences to her family and friends.

“Police are not currently classifying this incident as a road traffic fatality, until cause of death has been determined by an autopsy.”

He added: “A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to assist the deceased's loved ones at this difficult time.”

The crash happened on Middle Road, Southampton, near the junction with South Road.

Police also appealed for witnesses to a single-vehicle car crash that happened on South Road, Devonshire, near the junction with Tee Street about 6pm yesterday.

The spokesman said: “It appears that the car involved, described as a white BMW, was being driven in the eastbound lane of South Road when the vehicle stuck a utility pole.

“Apparently the male driver then got out of the car and fled on foot. Belco personnel attended the scene to repair the damaged utility pole.”

Witnesses to a West End crash involving a motorcycle and a car have also been asked to contact police.

The crash happened on Middle Road near Barnes Corner in Southampton about 4.15pm yesterday.

The spokesman said the male rider injured in the collision “was said to be conscious and aware of his surroundings while receiving treatment at the hospital” at 5pm yesterday.

He added: “An update on his condition will be provided in due course.”

Witnesses to all three crashes are asked to contact police on 295-0011.
