Teen found riding cycle while impaired
A teenager was banned from the road after he was caught driving wit h two times the legal blood-alcohol limit.
Daquan Burgess, 16, of Warwick, was arrested at around 2.20am on August 14 by officers on mobile patrol.
According to Senior Crown counsel Cindy Clarke, Burgess was stopped on South Road, in Warwick, for a broken tail light. The officers then noticed the smell of alcohol on his breath and asked him if he had been drinking.
Burgess replied that he hadn’t drunk anything. The officers searched him and found a bottle of Smirnoff vodka in his backpack.
Burgess pleaded guilty and apologised in Magistrate’s Court, saying: “I never should have been drinking.”
An alco-analyser test showed that he had 174mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, just over two times the legal limit of 80mg.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner banned Burgess from the road for 12 months and fined him $1,000.
