Man charged with child sex offences

A 47-year-old man has been charged with a string of child sex offences after a police raid uncovered thousands of pornographic photos and movies at his home.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, stands charged with molesting a young boy on five occasions during the period 2008 to 2011.

The alleged victim, currently aged nine, was a family friend of the accused man, according to prosecutor Larissa Burgess.

The defendant is also charged with 15 counts of making child pornography and four counts of accessing it.

Ms Burgess told the court the offences took place over a number of years. When the allegations of child molestation surfaced, she said, police raided the man’s home and found more than 3,000 pornographic photos and more than 100 movie files.

These involved sexual acts between children, sexual acts between children and adults and bestiality, according to the prosecutor.

The man did not have to enter pleas as the matter must be dealt with at Supreme Court. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner declined his request for bail, and remanded him into custody pending a further court appearance next month.
