Man stole Cockspur

A self-confessed drug addict who stole food and three bottles of rum from a grocery store was fined $500 in Magistrates’ Court.

Anthony Outerbridge, 50, admitted stealing $125.71 worth of items from the Southampton MarketPlace on June 30, 2010.

The court heard that at around 4.40pm that day, a store manager noticed Outerbridge by the checkout area moving items between his paper grocery bags and a duffel bag. Suspicious, the manager asked another staff member to check the store’s security cameras.

The Southampton resident was recorded removing a bottle of Cockspur rum from the shelf and placing it in his jacket. Store staff confronted Outerbridge in the parking area and discovered three bottles of rum, jelly and a package of pens. He hadn’t paid for any of the items.

A further search revealed around 30 items that were not included in Outerbridge’s receipts, including meat, cheese and toffee. He was later arrested.

Yesterday, Outerbridge pleaded guilty to stealing, but said he only took cheese and jam.

He further told the court that he was using drugs at the time but is now two years sober.
