Witness denies working on job sites listed on cheques

The jury in a fraud trial was yesterday shown cheque stubs revealing another construction firm was paid irregularly for work done at Works and Engineering boss Kyril Burrows’ private home.

Allan Foote told Supreme Court his firm AD&T Excavating was hired in 2005 to work at Turkey Hill, the property Mr Burrows allegedly renovated with more than $553,000 of taxpayers’ money.

Mr Foote was shown cheque stubs revealing Works and Engineering paid him to work at “Prospects Depot”, “Co-Ed”, and “Parsons Road Conduit”.

Under questioning from prosecutor Susan Mulligan, Mr Foote said he had not worked on those public projects.

Asked whether he had raised concerns about this, the witness told the court: “Not really. I just got paid. That was it.”

Previously during the trial, John White has said his company J&M Construction was paid for work at Turkey Hill after submitting invoices to Works and Engineering.

Mr White claimed Mr Burrows told him Turkey Hill was a Government office; however cheque stubs showed he was actually paid for work on a string of public projects for which his company had no involvement.

Mr Burrows and his wife Delcina Bean-Burrows deny 35 charges between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2009, alleging crimes of cheating, obtaining money transfers by deception, obtaining property by deception, money laundering and false accounting.

The trial continues.
