Impaired drivers banned, fined for impaired driving

Two women were banned from the road after they admitted drinking and driving in separate incidents last week.Sheila Henderson, 63, from Sandys, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to driving while impaired in Sandys on April 4.Crown counsel Garrett Byrne told the court that at around 9.30pm that day, officers on mobile patrol received a report from a member of the public of a car being driven in an erratic manner.Officers eventually located the car, which they found stationary in the middle of West Side Road, blocking traffic in both directions. They spoke to Henderson, who apologised and admitted that she had been drinking. Also appearing in court was 46-year-old Gina Scott from Warwick, who admitted riding a motorcycle while her blood contained more than 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. She was arrested on Good Friday after officers noticed her riding a blue motorcycle in an erratic manner along Trimingham Hill and then abruptly stopping. The officers asked Scott if she was all right, and she responded that the had injured her ankle in an accident, and the ache was causing her to drive erratically. Despite her explanation, the officers noticed that her breath smelled of alcohol and continued to question her.Scott admitted drinking earlier in the evening and submitted to a breath test, which revealed a lower reading of 229ml of alcohol in 100mg of blood, more than double the legal limit.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined both women $1,000 and banned them from driving all vehicles for a period of one year.
