Man drunkenly hit a stranger

A St David’s man who admitted drunkenly hitting a stranger said he acted in self-defence, but later confessed he did not remember the incident.Dion Burgess, 46, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court yesterday to assault following an incident on Front Street the previous day.Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney told the court that at around 6pm on Monday the victim, William Ridley, was getting on his motorcycle on Front Street near Juice and Bean when Burgess approached him.Burgess asked Mr Ridley if he was a child, and then asked if the complainant had moved his bike.He then struck Mr Ridley in the head twice with a closed fist, striking the complainant’s helmet. Mr Ridley told the defendant to leave, threatening to call the police, but Burgess struck him a third time.Mr Ridley pushed Burgess away and rode his motorcycle away from his attacker. He then contacted police and followed Burgess as he walked towards the Yacht Club. When police arrested Burgess, they noticed that he smelled strongly of alcohol and his eyes appeared glazed. After pleading guilty, Burgess told the court that Mr Ridley had attacked him first, but Mr Mahoney said the only contact between the two before the attack was the defendant saying “hello.”Questioned about the incident by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner, Burgess conceded that he had been drinking.Asked what he remembers about the day in question, Burgess replied: “I remember being on Front Street. I don’t recall attacking the guy.”Mr Warner noted a long series of prior convictions, the bulk of which revolve around alcohol consumption and sentenced Burgess to 15 days imprisonment starting immediately.
