Man fined for stealing food

A man with a history of stealing food was fined $200 in Magistrates’ Court yesterday for committing yet another offence.George Joell, 56, said he took $44 worth of food from the Shopping Centre on Victoria Street because he was “down and out” on April 3. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner reminded the St George’s resident that he’d stolen a hot tray of food from MarketPlace — twice.“You should know by now that you can’t go in people’s stores and take what you want,” he said.Mr Joell replied: “I was hungry and I needed food. I was only working on a part-time basis at the time, and I don’t get paid until the end of the month.”Mr Warner shook his head and said: “When people get hungry they do funny things but you didn’t need to do this.”He ordered Joell to pay a $200 fine by May 25.
