Jail for man who smashed ATM

A 38-year-old Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute outpatient has been jailed for nine months after smashing an ATM with a metal pipe.Paul Williams, of Southampton, has been held in custody for a psychological report since his April 17 court appearance, when he admitted causing $15,000 in damage to the machine. The incident was triggered when Williams, whom the court heard has a history of drug-induced psychosis, had his bank card “eaten” by the ATM outside White’s Supermarket, Warwick on April 8.Sentencing Williams, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner noted that the accused has “a history of non-compliance with mental health treatment”.“I am of the view that you know you have got psychiatric problems, you refuse to accept help for them, and you believe that you can do what you want to do and then simply say, ‘I have got mental health issues, so you can’t do anything to me’,” Mr Warner told him. “That’s not going to happen.”Since Williams’ report indicated he could be treated in Westgate, Mr Warner ordered him imprisoned for nine months, with treatment in custody.
