Woman stole carrots and biscuits from store

A 60-year-old Pembroke woman with a previous conviction for shoplifting was fined $400 in Magistrates’ Court for stealing carrots and biscuits from the MarketPlace in Hamilton.Shirley William Bailey Francis admitted putting a bag of carrots and a “tube of biscuits” in her purse while grocery shopping on June 4. Crown counsel Tawana Tannock said the goods were worth just over $9.She was observed going into the store elevator after paying for other groceries but not the items concealed in her handbag but offered to pay for them when approached. The court heard that Ms Francis is a diabetic with high blood pressure who “didn’t take her medication” that morning and “therefore she was not making logical or rational decisions”.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner issued a $400 fine and gave the defendant until July 12 to pay.
