A 34-year-old who claimed he was racing to take his pregnant girlfriend to hospital when caught speeding, was yesterday fined $400 for the offence.Kameron Fox was travelling on his motorcycle at 82kph when stopped by police on March 19.Crown counsel Garrett Byrne said the Chapel of Ease Road, St George’s resident said he was racing to assist his girlfriend, who was thought to be having a medical emergency.Fox said he explained to the police officer that he was racing to drive his girlfriend to the hospital, but the officer said he couldn’t provide an escort at the time.Fox continued to Somerset to pick up his girlfriend. By the time he arrived, his girlfriend had been in contact with a nurse and told that what she was experiencing was normal.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner told the court that there is a proviso in the law regarding speeding. If the defendant can prove that it was necessary to exceed the speed limit to avoid serious danger to a person or property, he can be found not guilty. But Mr Warner said that Fox’s case did not fit the proviso, as there was no immediate danger to his girlfriend. Fox received a $400 fine and four demerit points.
