Woman denies stealing charge

A Devonshire woman accused of stealing $20,000 has appeared in Magistrates’ Court.Alesha De La Chevotiere, 26, of Upland Street, pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing the sum from Sergio Lottimore on July 16.Ms De La Chevotiere was in custody, but Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner granted bail of $10,000.However, Mr Warner threatened her with 30 days’ imprisonment if she failed to pay $300 forthwith for two June 21 traffic offences.Arguing that Bermuda has a “culture” of not taking traffic fines seriously, defence lawyer Elizabeth Christopher argued that the offences should not be held against her client, but Mr Warner said he was fed up with people ignoring court summonses. The defendant was also given 30 days to pay another $250 fine for speeding. A trial date for theft will be set in October.
