Teen fined for hitting police car

A teenager who crashed into a police car was banned from the road after he admitted drinking and driving.Joshua Hughes, 19, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to driving while impaired by alcohol in an incident on July 28.The court heard that at around 2.30am that day, an officer was driving along Front Street when she noticed the motorcycle behind her was travelling unreasonably close to her vehicle.The officer turned into a parking bay on Par-la-Ville Road, at which point the motorcycle ridden by the defendant struck the car. When Hughes spoke to the officer, she noticed his voice was slurred and that he smelled of alcohol.Asked if he had been drinking, the Southampton teen admitted having two drinks, saying he just wanted to go to his friend’s house.Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Hughes $800, and banned him from driving all vehicles for a period of one year.
