Brangman has sex assault sentence reduced

Former Bermuda Housing Corporation manager and Regiment Major Glenn Brangman has had his sentence for sexual assault reduced on appeal.

The 61-year-old was facing a three-and-a-half year jail term after being found guilty of four counts of sexual assault on a male clerk last year. His victim, aged 19 at the time of the assaults, cannot be named for legal reasons.

Brangman’s lawyer Shade Subair had previously argued in Supreme Court that the sentence was “manifestly excessive”.

And yesterday, Chief Justice Ian Kawaley ruled that the sentence should be cut by six months to three years.

Giving his ruling in Supreme Court, Mr Justice Kawaley said: “The appeal against sentence is allowed to the extent that the total time to be served, taking any time served on remand into account, is three years’ imprisonment rather than three-and-a-half years.”

Brangman’s victim, Mr X, was molested by his boss between January and June 2009, while living in BHC accommodation and working as a clerk at the quango.

It was later revealed that the officer was accused by 13 male soldiers of sexual misconduct before he was ordered to retire from the Bermuda Regiment in 2002.

Brangman, who continues to appeal his sentence and conviction, was released on bail. A previous appeal against his conviction failed.
