Tourist fined for driving drunk
A British tourist who rode his rental cycle up a one-way street while drunk was fined $1,000 in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
George Stephen Bell, 39, of Langthorne Street, London, admitted driving while impaired in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Prosecutor Maria Sofianos told the court that police officers patrolling Front Street just before 3.30am saw Bell make a right turn on a motorcycle into Burnaby Street, ignoring a no entry sign.
He was stopped and the officers noticed he smelt strongly of intoxicants, she said. Asked if he had been drinking, Bell told police: “I had two Coronas.”
He told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner: “I’m very sorry. I made a mistake.”
Mr Warner fined him $1,000 and disqualified him from driving any vehicle in Bermuda for a year. He was ordered to pay his fine immediately or face 30 days in jail.
