Man fined $800 for weed

A Pembroke man who admitted possession of 0.20 grams of marijuana was fined $800 at Magistrates’ Court today.

Jefferson Smith, 38, had his Deepdale Road home searched just before 9am on May 22 by police.

Crown counsel Susan Mulligan told the court that officers executed a warrant when Smith was alone in his bedroom on the second floor of his home.

They found a container in his drawers containing a bag labelled “cotton buds” containing a “dark substance”. Police also found a ziplock bag containing an ashtray with cigars burnt at each end.

Smith was arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis resin. He told police: “I told you guys I smoke weed; why do you guys take this seriously?”

The defendant was ordered to pay his fine by August 17 or face 30 days in jail.
