Man fined $800 for weed

A Pembroke man who admitted possession of 0.20 grams of marijuana was fined $800 at Magistrates’ Court today.Jefferson Smith, 38, had his Deepdale Road home searched just before 9am on May 22 by police.Crown counsel Susan Mulligan told the court that officers executed a warrant when Smith was alone in his bedroom on the second floor of his home.They found a container in his drawers containing a bag labelled “cotton buds” containing a “dark substance”. Police also found a ziplock bag containing an ashtray with cigars burnt at each end.Smith was arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis resin. He told police: “I told you guys I smoke weed; why do you guys take this seriously?”The defendant was ordered to pay his fine by August 17 or face 30 days in jail.
