Teen fined for racist attack on police

A Sandys teen has escaped with a $1000 fine after firing a volley of racist abuse at a police officer.Tyshaun Brown, 19, launched the drunken foul-mouthed tirade after being stopped by police on Front Street on New Year’s Eve.Brown was handcuffed by officers after flashing a ‘w’ at a group of people in Hamilton around 11.30pm, actions the officers considered inflammatory. On being stopped, and subsequently searched for weapons, Brown told a police officer: “F*** you, you white fa***t” and “F*** you, you white cracker.”Crown counsel Takiya Burgess told the Magistrates’ Court yesterday that police officers on foot patrol saw Brown flash a hand sign at a group of people walking on Front Street around 11.30pm that night. The officers considered Brown’s actions inflammatory and handcuffed him, at which point he swore at them.Brown was then charged with using offensive words, to which he replied: “I don’t know why you locked me up, I told them I was looking for my friends.”When asked yesterday by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner if he had anything to say, Brown replied: “I had a few drinks, I was drunk that night. I apologise to the court for my actions.”Mr Warner fined Brown a $1,000.
