Drug addict stole from jewellery store

A 64-year-old drug addict with mental issues, who stole $7,500 worth of jewellery to feed his heroin and cocaine habit was handed a 30-day prison sentence.

Sinclair Fox, of Warwick, pleaded guilty to one count of burglary in Magistrates' Court. However, he was released because he had been remanded in custody since June 21, something Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner took into consideration.

Fox admitted breaking into Kirk's Jewellery and Design shop on Front Street over the June 15 holiday weekend, and taking a number of items, including two rings valued at $2,500 each.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said: “You've been locked up several times, and that hasn't deterred you.

“Social Inquiry reports indicate that you could do with some mental help and drug treatment. Your history shows that you are not compliant with mental health treatment either.”

Magistrates' Court heard an employee closed the store for the holiday weekend, and returned June 18 to a moved showcase and a statue laying on its side.

CCTV footage showed Fox committing the burglary just after midnight.

Fox was remanded into custody on June 21, and released on Thursday with time already spent in custody taken into consideration.

He was also handed three years' probation, and ordered to comply with conditions that require drug treatment assessments and rehabilitation programmes.
