Woman drug smuggler in court

A mother of two attempted to import $9,200 worth of cannabis hidden within her hair and body.

Danielle Thomas, 33, of Warwick, admitted she tried to smuggle 184 grammes of cannabis through the airport after arriving from New York in January.

Thomas was apprehended by police after customs officers found plant-like material in her handbag, prosecutor Susan Mulligan told Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

After being taken to a private screening room, customs officers found a cylinder hidden in Thomas’ hair containing what tests showed to be 100.89g of cannabis.

A second cylinder was subsequently found hidden within Thomas’ body containing 83.35g of cannabis.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner extended Thomas’ bail and adjourned sentencing to January 17 pending a Social Inquiry Report.
