Teen fined over high-speed chase

A 19-year-old has admitted fleeing police in a high-speed chase and hiding in shrubbery to dodge arrest.

Jarico Burt, of Hamilton Parish, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court this morning to driving in a dangerous manner on October 6.

Prosecutor Maria Sofianos told the court a police motorcyclist saw Burt overtaking cars at high speed at 1.43pm on North Shore Road, Devonshire, and gave chase.

Burt refused to stop and was travelling at more than 100kph at one stage. He lost control and fell then ran away, and police lost sight of him in shrubbery at Parsons Lane.

He was found hiding in the shrubbery and arrested for dangerous driving that caused other motorists to take evasive action.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Burt $500 and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 12 months.

His fine must be paid by November 7.
