Man admits cursing at police officer

A Warwick man who admitted cursing at police was this morning given a conditional discharge.

Buford Smith, 54, pleaded guilty to using offensive words towards an officer in an incident at the Hamilton ferry terminal on May 5.

The court heard that officers were called to the area that afternoon by a Marine and Ports employee. The employee asked them to get Smith, who was fishing in the area, to move, saying it was dangerous to be fishing where he was.

The officers spoke to Smith, who packed up his equipment and began to walk away. However police heard him curse repeatedly at the Marine and Ports employee as he walked past.

Police warned Smith that it was unlawful to use offensive language in a public place, to which Smith responded: “I don't even like you, you f***ing pig.”

After Smith pled guilty, magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo issued him a six-month conditional discharge, warning him: “Don't let it happen again.”
