Two banned from the road for drink-driving

Two people have been banned from the road after being caught drinking and driving on the same street almost a month apart.

William Roberts, 53, was stopped by police on Church Street after police saw him veering across both lanes on Queen Street at 1am on December 10.

He admitted drinking to the officers. “I had more than a few,” he said.

Roberts provided a breath sample, with the lowest reading showing 213 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — more than double the legal limit.

Roberts pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to driving while over the legal limit. He admitted: “I wasn't thinking straight.”

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe responded: “How much thinking do you need to have to say you're not getting on the bike?

“Your children could have been on the road that night. You could have hit them, caused them damage. My children could have been on the road.”

Mr Wolffe fined Roberts $1,200, and banned him from driving for 18 months.

Also appearing before the courts was Veronica Tambor, 25, who admitted failing to provide a breath sample.

The court heard that at 1am on January 6, she was spotted by police veering across both lanes of Queen Street.

Tambor was stopped on Church Street and had difficulty getting her bike on its stand.

She admitted having two glasses of wine in the evening, and agreed to provide police with breath samples.

Tambor provided one sample, which showed a reading of 181 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, but did not provide a second sample.

Mr Wolffe fined Tambor $800 and banned her from driving all vehicles for one year.
