Magistrates' Court, (File photograph)

A senior has been charged with sexually touching a girl more than 40 years ago.

The 73-year-old Smiths man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, denied indecently assaulting a girl under the age of 14.

The offence allegedly took place on an unknown date between January 1, 1970, and September 14, 1972.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe released the senior on $7,500 bail on the condition that he avoid all contact with the complainant and any females under the age of 16.

The matter is expected to return to the courts on June 21.
