A man was fined and banned from the roads yesterday for riding his bike while three times the legal alcohol limit.

Ryan Najmulski, 31, admitted the offence, which happened on Sunday, but told Magistrates’ Court that he could not remember the incident.

The court heard that police saw Najmulski swerving and almost hitting a car on Point Pleasant Road about 6.20pm.

Officers shouted at him to stop, but he proceeded onto Pitts Bay Road, where he fell off his bike.

Najmulski, from Warwick, fell again as the officers helped him to sit. He was arrested and taken to hospital before being moved to Hamilton Police Station.

A breathalyser test showed he had 240 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — three times the legal limit of 80mg.

Najmulski said the offence was “out of character” and vowed it would never happen again.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined him $1,200 and banned him from the roads for 18 months.
