A Bermudian tattoo artist will be sentenced in Jamaica this week for attempting to smuggle 42lb of cannabis into Britain.

Zharrin Simmons, 27, was arrested at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica, on the afternoon of May 28 as she attempted to board a flight to Manchester, England.

Jamaican media outlet McKoy’s News reported she was stopped after a police dog alerted police to a black suitcase she had checked in.

During a search of the bag, officers found the cannabis.

Khadine Colman, the lawyer for Simmons, told St James Parish Court last month that her client knew there was cannabis in the suitcase, but was not aware there was so much.

The lawyer also told the court that Simmons was remorseful.

Simmons was set to be sentenced last week, but the hearing was deferred because the court had not received her criminal records and antecedents.

She is expected to return to the court tomorrow.

In Bermuda, Simmons was sentenced to five years in prison in 2012 for two counts of robbery.

The Supreme Court heard Simmons and two men attacked a couple who were sat in a parked car on Hermitage Road the previous year.

Simmons was also one of five teenagers charged with the 2008 murder of 18-year-old Kellon Hill on Elbow Beach. She was acquitted on the direction of Judge Charles-Etta Simmons, who found she had no case to answer.
