Toddler was loose in drink-driver’s car

A man who admitted drink driving with an unrestrained toddler in the back seat of his car was sent to DUI Court today.

The move came after Anthony Thomas, 58, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to drink driving and driving while disqualified.

The court heard that Thomas's car was seen by a police patrol to cross the centre line on Crow Lane, near Hamilton.

Officers spotted a child, later found to be aged 3, standing in the back seat looking out the rear window and pulled the car over.

Thomas when questioned said: “I just had one beer.”

A licence plate check showed that Thomas was banned for drink driving until December 21.

Thomas was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and driving while disqualified.

He was taken to Hamilton Police Station and breath tested.

The results of the breath test were not read out in court.

The incident took place on December 7 last year.

Thomas, from Pembroke, asked the court if he could be sent to DUI Court for treatment.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe ordered Thomas to appear in DUI Court on January 21 and released him on $1,000 bail.

He also banned Thomas from the roads until a further order from the court.
