Motorcyclist spotted drink-driving in the act

A Paget man seen on a motorbike with a beer bottle in his hand was sent to the DUI Court yesterday after he admitted riding while almost three times the legal limit.

Magistrates' Court heard that Yusuf Johnston, 43, avoided jail time after he pleaded guilty to drink-driving for the third time in the past ten years.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe said: “You need help, sir — you could have hurt yourself pretty badly or hurt someone else.

“You were almost three times the limit at 6.40pm on a Tuesday.

“Let's see if we can get you some help, Mr Johnston.”

The court heard that police saw Johnston on Corkscrew Hill, Devonshire, with a green bottle in his left hand that he appeared to drink from.

They followed him onto the roundabout on Crow Lane and watched him cross the yellow centre line, which forced cars to brake hard to avoid him.

Johnston later noticed the police and attempted to hide the bottle as they pulled him over.

The officers arrested him on suspicion of drink-driving and he agreed to take a breath test.

The court heard that Mr Johnston had 238.7 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80mg/100ml.

The incident happened on July 14.

Mr Wolffe ordered a drug assessment on Johnston and released him on $500 bail.

He adjourned the case until September 1 and banned Johnston from the roads until further notice.
