Drinking and driving lands man with fine and roads ban

A Smith’s man was taken off the roads for 18 months after pleading guilty to driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Jermaine Davis, 51, admitted the offence in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

According to Carrington Mahoney, for the Crown, police officers attended a single-vehicle collision involving a car on Middle Road, Smith’s shortly before 10pm on September 8.

When asking Davis the circumstances surrounding the collision, officers noticed that his eyes were glazed, his speech was slurred and that his breath smelt of alcohol.

Davis told officers that he had not had a drink since earlier that day. He was then taken to Hamilton Police Station.

He told magistrate Craig Attridge that he needed insulin at the time the accident happened and said that if he had his insulin, the accident would never have happened.

In addition to banning Davis from the roads, Mr Attridge ordered that he pay a $1,200 fine.
