Fine and 18-month road ban for man caught drink-driving

A Pembroke man was taken off the roads for 18 months after admitting to driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Gualter Pacheco Linhares, 33, pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Adley Duncan, for the Crown, told the court that on July 24, police noticed a bike being driven erratically between Roberts Avenue and Parsons Road in Devonshire. They later observed Linhares sitting in the middle of the road on his cycle.

When he stepped off his bike, police noticed that he was unsteady on his feet, his eyes were red and his speech was slurred.

He was taken to Hamilton Police Station, where a breath test revealed that he had 122.5mg of alcohol within 100ml of blood. The legal limit for driving in Bermuda is 80mg/100ml.

In addition to being banned, Linhares was ordered to pay a $1,200 fine. Magistrate Craig Attridge gave him until November 30 to pay it.
