Truck driver who hid after crash banned from roads

Magistrates' Court

A drink-driver who caused a three-vehicle collision in Hamilton has been banned from the roads for 18 months.

John DeRoza, 70, from Sandys, admitted to driving while under the influence of alcohol when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard that on January 20, DeRoza hit two vehicles while turning from Front Street on to Court Street in his truck.

After the incident, he hid in a nearby alleyway until police arrived on the scene.

Officers saw that DeRoza’s eyes were red and smelt alcohol on his breath and took him to the Hamilton Police Station.

In addition to the ban, DeRoza was fined $1,500.
