Man fined $500 for smashing neighbour’s window

Magistrates' Court

A man who shattered his neighbour’s bedroom window was fined $500 in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Michael James, 59, from Warwick, pleaded guilty to damaging the window, as well as bedding.

The court heard that on December 5, James’s neighbour Phaedra Smith was in her kitchen when she heard glass break.

She went to check where the noise came from and saw the damaged window and a battery on her bedroom floor and James leaving the property.

He admitted in court to throwing the battery through the window, causing it to shatter.

Because the broken glass had ruined some of Ms Smith’s bedding, she also had to buy new sheets and a blanket.

James told magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that he broke the window because someone had damaged one at his house.

In addition to being fined, James was ordered to pay Ms Smith $920, the total cost of the damages.
