Canadian charged with importing almost $1m worth of cannabis

A Canadian national has been charged in Magistrates’ Court with importing almost $1 million worth of cannabis into the island.

Ngongo-Eric Sampassa, 31, who lives in Ottawa, was also charged with having the drug with intent to supply when he appeared in court on Thursday.

Both alleged offences occurred on March 11 in St George’s and the cannabis has an estimated value of $973,600, Carrington Mahoney, for the Crown, said.

Since the case must be heard in the Supreme Court, Mr Sampassa was not required to enter a plea.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson released Mr Sampassa on $25,000 bail. He will appear in Supreme Court to be arraigned on May 1.

Mr Sampassa was also ordered to attend Hamilton Police Station three days a week and to surrender all travel documents.
