Man banned and fined $1,300 for driving through red light

A man who drove through a red traffic light has been banned from riding bikes for a year.

Gordon Nelson, 32, from St George’s, pleaded guilty to driving carelessly and lying to police when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The court heard that in September 2021, officers stopped at the light on Harrington Sound Road, Smith’s, and saw Nelson ride past it while it was still red.

Because of work being done in the area, the section of road was open to only one lane of traffic.

After being stopped by police near Devil’s Hole Hill, Nelson identified himself as his brother, Denzil, and also lied about his date of birth.

In addition to being banned, Nelson was fined $1,300.
