Man admits to carrying hatchet inside police car

A man who carried a hatchet inside a police car will be sentenced next month.

Anthony Young, 37, admitted having the weapon in public when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard that after being questioned, Young, from Warwick, told officers he had the hatchet “in case guys want to act up”.

He said this while being taken to the Hamilton Police Station in connection with an unrelated matter on May 25.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson ordered social inquiry, drug use and mental health reports to be written for Young and adjourned the case until next month for sentencing.

Young was released on $3,000 bail until that time and ordered to follow a daily 8pm-to-6am curfew.
