Drink-drivers fined and banned from roads

Motorists who were stopped by police during two public holidays have been disqualified from driving all vehicles for 18 months.

Jalun Hassell, 22, and Matthew Groves, 18, both admitted driving while impaired by alcohol when they appeared in Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that police followed Hassell after he was seen speeding and overtaking several vehicles along Crow Lane on Boxing Day.

Hassell, from Southampton, struck a car in front of him when he pulled over for officers and told them he had been drinking alcohol, but “not enough to be drunk”.

The court heard later that soon after midnight on New Year’s Day, police carrying out sobriety checks stopped Groves, from Sandys, near George’s Bay Road, and smelled alcohol on his breath.

Both men were fined $1,500 in addition to being banned.
